The Myth of the Rushed Morning for Working Moms

July 04, 20266 min read

Coffee dumped into a to-go mug, kids' bags flinging out the door while their second shoe remains hidden from sight, car stopped on the driveway as you're running back inside to grab something critical...sound familiar?

The rush out the door every morning sometimes feels like a rite of passage for starting the day, like without the adrenaline-fueled madness, nobody will end up where they need to be when they need to be there.

But I'm here to tell you: it's not. You can wake up feeling energized instead of dread, drink that morning brew at home, have breakfast with the family, and still have everyone packed up and out the door with your heart rate never elevating above a gentle resting rhythm. Really.

The Rushed Morning Habit

Have you ever kicked a bad habit? You didn't like the way you were doing something or the fact that habit was in your life, so you took steps to change it. Now, it's almost weird to think that thing was the norm for you.

Your daily motherhood routines are habits, too. They're the version that life defaults to when you're not intentionally deciding otherwise. But the thing is, when you make a decision to shift into a routine today, tomorrow, and every day after that, the new routine becomes the default. It turns into something you don't even have to decide anymore because it's just your new norm.

Right now, rushed mornings are a habit in your family. They represent the easy, default pattern that gets repeated day in and out and feels like the only option. But like any bad habit, you can kick those wild mornings and turn them into something that feels supportive for the day ahead for your entire family.

The Morning Rhythm

Mornings in particular are a critical time to ensure you are writing the narrative you want. Mornings set the tone for your day, and that of your family's days.

Mornings determine how you show up at work, the way you take on that work, and maybe even how you talk about your motherhood at work (think an eye roll to commiserate about how hard it is with a coworker versus a cute story about your toddler helping out in the kitchen that morning).

The way your day unfolds eventually plays into how you're showing back up in your mom role that afternoon and evening. Mornings are the reset button, and you have an opportunity every single day to dictate the direction of your new day.

If you crave a slower feel to your life, but you only have capacity to do one thing now, let it be rewriting your morning rhythm. Keep reading to learn how.

Make the Shift from Chaotic to Calm Mornings

I developed a simple framework that you can use to make the shift from chaotic to calm mornings, even if you work full time and don't have capacity to wake before your kids. Use these prompts to journal on your morning routine and examine where you can start to ease the overwhelm.

  1. Identify the Gap

Before you can set up a new morning routine, you need to know exactly what you really want in that space and how your current routine differs. Is it night and day between the two, or would just a handful of shifts make a major difference? Get clear on where you are compared to where you want to be.

Name specifically why your current routine doesn't feel the way you want it to. What are the biggest stressors or friction points in your routine today that support the chaos instead of the calm? What would be different in an ideal morning routine?

  1. Create Space

Often the biggest challenge for working moms with chaotic morning routines is the tasks. Your bag needs packed, everyone needs something to eat, your kids' daycare items need to be in the car, maybe you even work out in the morning...it all adds up. Not to mention the unknowns of raising littles at any time of day or night; if there's already no space, what happens when they need a little extra time that morning to wake up, recenter after a tantrum, or just enjoy a leisurely breakfast?

Write down where your time is actually going in the mornings. Then, identify what you can subtract. There may be some things you absolutely have to handle in the morning, but there could be others that you don't actually have to handle at all. The goal here is to open up time, so think critically about what in the current routine needs to stay.

  1. Build Your Dream Morning Routine

At this point, you've determined what's missing in your mornings and identified opportunities to create space. I'm sure you can guess what goes into that newfound space! Look at what you wrote down for where you want to be in the first journaling prompt. Start to plug in activities and routines that make sense within the space you created in the second prompt.

It's important to avoid overloading your new routine with feel-good activities that will ultimately turn into another to do list. For this first iteration of your morning routine rewrite, you may have opened up just 30 minutes and now have an opportunity to eat breakfast and drink your warm morning beverage together as a family. Let that shift be enough for right now. You can always revisit these prompts and make additional edits over time.

Cultivate Calm Mornings

I hope this journaling session sparked a desire in you to slow down your morning routine and turn it into something that offers support rather than stress. If these changes still feel out of reach for your family or situation, I invite you to explore Cultivate Calm Mornings, my three-part yoga workshop series that supports your transition from chaotic to calm mornings.

Inside, you'll find one yoga workshop associated with each step in the framework above that guided your journaling practice today.

  1. Identify the Gap: Reconnect with what you truly want in your mornings and tap into your deep worthiness to receive it.

  2. Create Space: Learn how to gently move the nonessentials off your plate so you have room to breathe.

  3. Build Your Dream Mornings: Integrate simple rituals that nourish you and root into your resolve to make your dream mornings your new normal.

Each workshop offers a yoga movement class, guided meditation, real-time journaling session, and a homework assignment to integrate the shifts you're making over the course of the week. By week three, you'll be experiencing a completely new, nourishing routine.
